The Bionicle have been around for quite a while (launched by Lego at the end of 2000) and there is a large and detailed back story which I don't think I could even begin to understand. If you ask a 6-14 year old, however, and I'm sure you'll get all the Bionicle backstory (Wikipedia article) you will need. In a nutshell, Bionicle (Biological Chronical) is set across several "worlds": The tropical Mata Nui island, the overdeveloped. industrial Metru Nui, the depths of Mahri Nui; the stalagtites of Karda Nui, and even survive on the barren, rocky Voya Nui.

Our heroes are the Toa... defenders of good and protectors of the Matoran. The villains are the Bohrok and the Vahki. There are numerous Titans and Warriors throughout the Bionicle realm superior in strength and stature to the Toa, but with crucial missions to fulfil, such as protecting the Mask of Life.
